Transmission oil filters are one of the most important components that affect the durability and reliability of the entire drivetrain. In our online store, you'll find a wide selection of high-quality filters designed for various types of transmissions – both manual and automatic. Understanding their function and importance will help you make an informed purchase decision and ensure the long, trouble-free operation of your vehicle.
Why are transmission oil filters so important?
The main task of a transmission oil filter is to remove contaminants – metal shavings, sediment, and other particles that naturally form during transmission operation. As the transmission oil circulates through the system, it collects these particles, and the filter effectively traps them before they can damage the delicate internal components of the transmission. A malfunctioning or worn filter can lead to a number of problems, such as:
- Increased friction and component wear: Contaminants in the oil cause accelerated wear of bearings, gears, and other moving parts, which can result in expensive repairs. • Decreased gearbox efficiency: Contaminated oil loses its lubricating and cooling properties, affecting shifting smoothness and overall transmission smoothness.
- Oil overheating: Contaminant buildup can lead to increased oil temperature, shortening its lifespan and damaging seals.
- Transmission failure: In extreme cases, ignoring a worn filter can lead to complete gearbox failure.
Types of gearbox oil filters: internal and external
We offer filters for various gearbox designs, which can be categorized based on their location:
- Internal filters (inside the gearbox): These are the most common filters, especially in automatic transmissions. They are integrated with the oil pan or gearbox housing and require removal of the pan for replacement. Their structure is usually more complex, and their role in the proper functioning of the transmission is absolutely crucial. Replacing such a filter often involves replacing the oil pan gasket and, of course, the oil itself. Manual transmissions, although less common, may also feature internal mesh or magnetic filters to trap larger metal shavings.
- External filters (outside the transmission): Some transmission designs, especially more modern ones or those used in heavy-duty applications, utilize filters located outside the transmission, often in the oil cooling line. Their advantages include easier access and simpler replacement, which does not always require draining all the oil from the sump. External filters provide additional filtration and protection, particularly in systems requiring very high oil purity. They are found in both automatic transmissions and some manual transmissions, where the lubrication system is more complex.
When should you change your transmission oil filter?
The frequency of oil filter replacement depends on several factors, including the transmission type, the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations, and operating conditions. Manual transmissions typically have longer intervals, while automatic transmissions recommend changing the filter and oil every 60,000–120,000 km, or every 2–4 years. Due to their easier availability, some manufacturers may recommend checking or replacing external filters more frequently. Keep in mind that driving in harsh conditions (e.g., frequent trailer towing, traffic jams, or sporty driving) may require more frequent replacement.
Regular maintenance and filter replacement are an investment in the long and trouble-free operation of your transmission. Browse our selection and choose the filter perfectly suited to your vehicle, ensuring optimal operating conditions. Take care of your transmission today!
