S-tronic Dual-Mass Flywheel
S tronic gearboxes, known from Audi models and related VAG group brands, are extremely popular thanks to combining the convenience of an automatic with the dynamics of a manual transmission. One of the key components working with this technology is the dual-mass flywheel, commonly referred to as the “dual-mass.” Its main role is to reduce vibrations transferred from the engine to the gearbox. Although this solution significantly improves driving comfort, it can also be a source of problems.
Advantages of using a dual-mass flywheel
The dual-mass flywheel in S tronic gearboxes is designed to dampen engine operation irregularities, especially at low revs. Thanks to this:
- the driver experiences higher driving comfort – no excessive vibrations or noise,
- the gearbox and other drivetrain components are better protected against overloads,
- gear changes become smoother, which perfectly matches the character of S tronic.
In practice, this means less wear of the internal transmission components and more natural vehicle behavior, especially in the city and during dynamic acceleration.
Typical dual-mass flywheel failures in S tronic
Despite its many advantages, the dual-mass flywheel also has weak points. In S tronic gearboxes, especially with higher mileage or improper use, the most common issues include:
- knocking and rattling noises at idle,
- vibrations during acceleration, especially at low revs,
- jerks when starting or shifting gears,
- in extreme cases – disintegration of the vibration dampers, which can lead to more serious gearbox damage.
How to extend the lifespan of a dual-mass flywheel?
To avoid premature failures, it is worth remembering a few rules:
- Avoid driving at low revs – the engine and gearbox work less smoothly then, which heavily loads the dual-mass flywheel.
- Service the S tronic gearbox regularly – changing the oil every 60,000 km is essential. Contaminated oil worsens mechatronic performance, which in turn increases jerks transferred to the flywheel.
- Be gentle with the throttle when starting – sudden starts and frequent “over-revving” shorten the lifespan of this component.
- Do not ignore the first symptoms – quick reaction can save the gearbox from costly repairs.
